A South Side Summer: We visited renowned artist Theaster Gates’ gallery at 69th and Dorchester. The students learned about how he uses his skills as an artist to revitalize and reinvest in a neighborhood. This particular gallery was two abandoned buildings that were rehabbed with found objects.

Meeting with Father Pfleger, April 8, 2014: Alumni from the Columbia Links program met with Father Michael Pfleger of St. Sabina Church in Chicago’s Auburn-Gresham neighborhood. The students discussed how they covered violence as a public health issue and personal stories on how they have experienced violence. Adan Pedroza, a senior at Eric Solorio Community Academy High School, wrote the cover story for the 2013 edition of R_Wurd, about St. Sabina’s basketball peace tournaments between rival gangs

Columbia Links is a journalism skills-building, news literacy and leadership development program for youth and teachers in Chicago Public Schools housed at Columbia College Chicago. Through workshops, mentoring, and the creation of youth-produced media, Links works to build expertise, relationships, skills and opportunities that connect students, teachers and volunteers through journalism, while revitalizing youth media in Chicago.
